50 Killed in Shooting at Gay Nightclub

Fifty people were killed and 53 injured when a lone gunman opened fire in a gay nightclub in the US city of Orlando early Sunday morning. The gunman, Omar Mateen was shot dead by police.

The so called Islamic State has said it was behind the attack, but that has not been confirmed.

US President Barack Obama said the gun attack was “an act of terror and an act of hate.” He said American were united in “grief and outrage and a resolve to defend our people.”

NBC News reported the gunman had called emergency services before the attack and swore allegiance to IS.

The attack is the worst mass shooting in recent US history.

Eight of the victims have so far been named: Edward Sotomayor Jr, Stanley Almodovar III, Luis Omar Ocasio-Capo, Juan Ramon Guerrero, Eric Ivan Ortiz-Rivera, Peter O Gonzalez-Cruz, Luis S Vielma and Kimberly Morris.

In New Zealand, a memorial service will be held at 6pm Monday 13th June in Auckland.
